New Infographic Examines Millennial Generation's Deep Immersion in Digital World

OnlineSchools.com, a digital resource for online education from kindergarten to graduate school, looks at the tech-oriented lives of the Millennial generation in a new infographic, “The Millennial Teenager.” Millennials are those born between 1980 and 2000 and with virtually no memory of life before cell phones and the Internet.

Teens and twenty-somethings, who make up a majority of Millennials, are strongly connected by social media, technology and the online world. Ninety-four percent of today’s 18 to 34-year-olds have a cell phone and 70 percent have a laptop. Having grown up with the Internet, this group is using electronic communication, text messaging, social networks and email routinely on a daily basis.

"For this generation, sharing details of their lives and networking with others using technology is the norm,” said Seth Restaino, spokesperson for OnlineSchools.com. “They are always connected.”

Heavy use of cell phones and tablets comes with benefits and drawbacks. According to the infographic, research shows that texting and instant messaging cultivates reading, writing and spelling skills through phonetic and alphabetic awareness, and does not lead to poor grammar. However, there is some evidence to show that an over abundance of technology leads to inferior critical thinking.

"Opinion in the non-Millennial population is polarized," added Restaino. "Extensive use of digital media is seen by many as nothing more than a distraction, but it's impossible to ignore the enormous educational benefits it nurtures, too."
